In 1953, a contest was organized among Cuban artists to choose a design for the monument to Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, the Founding Father. The winner was Sergio López Mesa. In 1955, the statue of King Fernando VII was removed and on this site was erected the statue of lawyer Céspedes (1819-1874), who initiated the wars of independence. Céspedes was the first president of the Republic in Arms, embryon of the Cuban State, evidencing a notable political vision. The statue, made of marble, gives name to the square. |
