Cuba Works to Increase Pineapple Exports
Monday, July 13, 2020

Havana.- Cuban agriculture works on the incorporation of a new variety of pineapple, as part of actions to increase exports from the sector.

The pineapple variety is called Perola, it is of Brazilian origin and among its advantages is greater resistance to pests and better possibilities of industrial use.

In this regard, it has yields of between 60 and 70 tons per hectare, provides more juice and less acidity, characteristics that increase the yield of the fruit.

In addition to this, compared to the Spanish Red and the Cayenne Lisa varieties, the Perola has a shorter cultivation period and a larger mass.

Experts estimate that they will be able to exceed the export levels of the fruit by the end of the year, when the climate will favor production and it coincides with an increase in the demand for this food in the European market.
