Cuban Karateists to Compete in International Events

Havana.- Cuban karateists will prioritize their participation in important international sports events in 2021 and 2022.

Sports experts mentioned among the events the Olympic Games in Tokyo, as well as the Central American and Caribbean Games in Panama in 2022.

For the debut of this sport in Olympic competitions, 80 competitors are announced in three categories by sex in kumite (combat); that is, 55, 61 and +61 kg in the women's category; and 67, 75 and +75 kg in the men's contest.

Cuba aspires to access quotas through Cirelis Martínez and Baurelis Torres among the women, and Maikel Noriega, Darían Díaz and Lázaro Chapman among the men.

The approved number includes the best four karateists by ranking in the modalities of kumite and kata, in addition to 24 fighters who will qualify in the pre-Olympic tournament, 12 by continental representation, four by invitations and eight from the host country.
