Voluntary Blood Donations for Health in Cuba
Monday, May 18, 2020

Havana.- The Cuban health system promotes donations of blood byproducts, with a view to guaranteeing products of vital importance for the care of the population.

In the case of the blood bank in eastern Santiago de Cuba, hyperimmune plasma extractions are encouraged from patients recovered from Covid-19.

So far, the institution has accumulated six possible units of hyperimmune plasma to be transfused, coming from two donors, taking into account their health conditions.

Leukocyte mass is also obtained for the production of transfer factors and interferon, a first-line drug in the treatment protocol.

This last component is sent to the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center (CIGB), where it is processed and turned into a high-demand drug internationally.
