Havana.- The western Cuban province of Pinar del Río is promoting the sowing of the Virginia tobacco variety to produce cigarettes.
The crops in the municipalities of San Luis and Consolación del Sur will allow the supply of raw material to the factory that will be built in the Mariel Special Development Zone (ZEDM).
In the current harvest, 300 hectares of Virginia tobacco were planted, with good yields and a high quality.
For this work, the territory has modern technologies to obtain positions in trays and tunnels, planting, irrigation, fertilization and cure of nightshade.
With the execution of the Virginia project, the productive link is achieved with a modern cigarette factory created by the Cuban-Brazilian company Brascuba S.A., which will be supplied with the raw material from Pinar del Río province.
