Guatemala Faces Loss of jobs in Tourism
Monday, April 6, 2020

Guatemala.- The tourism sector in Guatemala faces the possible loss of some 600,000 jobs, as a consequence of the impact of the coronavirus.

The Guatemalan Exporters Association (AGEXPORT) asserted that there are 177,000 direct jobs and some 450,000 indirect jobs at risk.

The drop in foreign visitors has caused small and medium-sized tourism-related companies to suffer from "non-compliance with payments to suppliers and payrolls".

Among the jobs at risk are tour operators, travel agents, waiters, artisans, administrative staff of airlines and hotel services, among others.

Guatemala received 2.5 million tourists in 2019, with an interannual increase of 7 percent and with the preference of visitors for destinations such as Tikal and Atitlán.
