Western Province of Matanzas Opens Crafts Fest

Havana.- The western Cuban province of Matanzas hosted the 12th National Exhibition “Puro Arte: Pasión por la artesanía” (Pure Art: A passion for Handicrafts), devoted to small format pieces.

Under the theme of tobacco culture, more than 40 craftsmen from all over the island vyied for prizes, displaying works in wood, leather, metal, ceramics and textiles.

The jury awarded the Grand Prize to the tobacco humidifier box titled Abolengo (ancestry), by brothers Yunior and David González, a wooden sculpture recreated on an island populated by aboriginal people.

Three other humidifiers in precious woods were selected, with the first prize going to Edel Padrón, who crafted “Grietas en la historia” (Cracks in history).

Mentions went to David López (photography), Wendy Martell (dress design), Ricardo Rivera (wood carving), Pablo Perdomo and Gleisbby Perdomo (stained glass), Javier I. Pérez (painting), and Adolfo Gómez (wood carving).
