Brazil Predicts Billions in Losses in Tourism
Monday, March 23, 2020

Rio de Janeiro.- The tourism sector in Brazil estimates losses of around 6.5 billion dollars in 2020, as a consequence of the impact of Covid-19.

According to sources in the leisure industry, the contraction puts about 400 thousand jobs at immediate risk, with forecasts of travel cancellations of more than 75 percent.

Under these conditions, the government asked Congress to relax labor legislation for the affected tourism companies, guaranteeing the immediate payment of compensation to the dismissed employees.

As part of the damages, eight local tourist entities requested immediate financial assistance to cover personnel expenses, as they face the possibility of closure.

The relationship includes Resorts Brazil, Brazilian Association of the Hotel Industry, Forum of Hotel Operators in Brazil, Brazilian Federation of Accommodation and Food and Brazilian Association of Luxury Travel, among others.
