Monday, January 20, 2020

Havana.- Cuban renowned handicapped athlete Omara Durand has been nominated to the 2020 edition of the Laureus Awards.

A gold winner in 100, 200 and 400 meters runs in the T12 category (visually impaired) at the World Parathletics Championship in Dubai and the 6 Parapan-American Games in Lima, Peru, Durand is aspiring to the prize in her condition as best physically challenged sportswoman.

Other would be recipients are oarswoman and skier Oksana Masters (US), tennis player in wheelchair Diede Goot (The Netherlands), cyclist Jetze Plat (The Netherlands) runner in wheelchair Manuela Schar (Switzerland) and swimmer Alice Tai (United Kingdom).

In Durand’s view, the nomination comes as recognition to the high quality of sports in her native country.

Candidates to best athlete include Argentine soccer player Lionel Messi, US golf player Tiger Woods and Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal.
