Spanish Court Rejects Lawsuit against Meliá Hotels |
|
|
Monday, January 13, 2020
Madrid.- A Spanish judge has ruled against a lawsuit brought on Meliá Hotels for their investments in Cuba, in keeping with the Helms-Burton Act.
The judge’s decision put on hold the litigation by a family claiming rights on the land currently occupied by one of Meliá’s hotels in the island country.
Likewise, such online booking agencies as Trivago and Cuban Hotel Groups Gran Caribe, Cubanacán and Gaviota have been exempted from related liabilities.
To some observers, the US act is a contradiction in International Law, as it bestows litigation rights on Cuban American plaintiffs who were Cuban citizens at the time their property were nationalized.
Last September Meliá managed to have another lawsuit against it shelved by a Spanish court, following claims that the Hotel Group was illegally exploiting hotels in Cuba.
