Urban Agriculture Plays a Role in Cuban Economy
Monday, January 13, 2020

Havana.- Urban orchards in Cuba are claiming a space of their own, contributing more and better food choices for the locals.

By the end of 2019 over a million tons of vegetables and fresh seasoning mixtures were available to the man on the street, thus surpassing the original goal.

These achievements are part of the further goal of cultivating a hectare of urban land per every thousand urban dwellers, as a way to guarantee a permanent availability of fresh garden produce.

Joining the ranks of urban orchard production are backyards and land lots, with an aim to encourage local self-sufficiency.

Special attention is being devoted to seeds, as they will replace imports and will guarantee planting in due time.
