Havana.- The healthcare system in the central Cuban province of Sancti Spiritus has successfully administered the medicine Heberprot-P to treat patients suffering from diabetic foot ulcers.
According to specialists, from 2007 to date, the drug has been administered to some 8,000 patients, and only 0.6 percent of them have undergone amputations.
It is worth mentioning that the local Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center produces and commercializes monoclonal antibodies.
It is also involved in the development of technologies to produce enzymes for industrial use, in addition to three lines to treat diseases that affect the central nervous system, cancer and hepatitis B, among other ailments.
Cuba has two other similar centers in Havana and Camagüey.
