Chile Shows Pessimistic Environment for Tourism
Monday, December 9, 2019

Santiago, Chile.- Chile's tourism industry shows an unfavorable scenario, with a 19.3-percent contraction in tourist arrivals at the end of October.

According to the Undersecretariat of Tourism, 3,749,624 foreign visitors arrived in the country during that period.

In October alone, when the social outburst began on the 18th, the fall in tourist arrivals was 17 percent.

The decrease in visits is mainly due to the reduction in tourism from Argentina, as a result of the economic crisis in that country.

Meanwhile, for the last two months, forecasts point to a greater adverse effect, since hotel occupancy should remain at around 30 percent.

At the end of October, the Federation of Tourism Companies of Chile (Fedetur), which includes hotels, travel agencies and airlines, had already reported the cancellation of 51 percent of reservations.
