Genetic Services for Children in Cuba
Monday, September 16, 2019

Havana.- Genetic services in the Cuban healthcare system contribute to the reduction of infant mortality by preventing inherited diseases.

In that regard, the work of the National Center for Medical Genetics has made it possible to reduce the death rate due to congenital defects to 0.8 per 1,000 live births over the past three years.

In just three decades of sustained work that institution has succeeded to reduce this important health indicator by 50 percent.

The national genetics program has achieved coverage of 95 to 99 percent in pregnant women and newborns in all prenatal and neonatal medical centers in the country.

For this, the National Network of Medical Genetics Services operates, with provincial departments and municipal services and at the level of polyclinics.
