Lawsuit against Melia for Operations in Cuba Dismissed
Monday, September 9, 2019

Madrid.- A Spanish court dismissed the lawsuit filed against Melia Hotels International for the alleged illegitimate exploitation of hotels in Cuba.

The Sanchez-Hill family's claim was made under the US Helms-Burton Act against Cuba, with a marked extraterritorial character.

The opinion is blunt in stating that a Spanish court is not competent to assess, among other things, whether the nationalization agreed by the Cuban State in 1960 was lawful or not.

Melia expressed satisfaction with the ruling that begins the path of the necessary clarification of the real limits that extraterritorial claims of this kind may have.

It is worth mentioning that the company has been operating legally in Cuba for more than 30 years.
