Cuban Healthcare System Promotes Human Milk Banks
Monday, April 22, 2019

Havana.- The Cuban healthcare system promotes the creation of human milk banks in several territories of the country, with a view to feeding newborns.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) will donate the medical equipment for a milk bank that will operate in the eastern province of Ciego de Avila.

The technology, valued at more than 50,000 dollars, is part of the cooperation project promoted by the United Nations with Cuba, where maternal and child healthcare is prioritized.

Cuba has milk banks in 10 provinces, while those in Ciego de Avila, Villa Clara, Matanzas and one in Havana are under construction.

This service guarantees optimal feeding to babies weighing less than 1,500 grams, those who require surgery, and those who cannot be breast-fed by their mothers or whose mothers do not have the possibility of breastfeeding them.
