Cuban Apiculturists Work to Recover Sector
Monday, June 20, 2011

Havana.- Completing the park of beehives and increasing honey production gradually to 10,000 tons by 2015 are strategic goals set by Cuban apiculturists.

They also plan to increase the value added of production by increasing recollection of ecological and specific honey and increasing the varieties of propolis, royal jelly and other byproducts.

Cuba produced more than 10,000 tons of bee honey in 1982-83, a record production in the sector. However, bad weather conditions and strong hurricanes hitting the country over the past few years affected yield and production.

Cuban authorities are interested in increasing production, because honey is a traditional export that is highly quoted on the international market (some 3,000 dollars per ton).
