New Grand Master in Cuban Chess
Monday, December 13, 2010

Havana.- Chess player Yanira Vigoa became Cuba's seventh Grand Master (GM) after winning the Pan-American Championship for women.

At the event, held in Brazil, Vigoa scored eight points after defeating FIDE Master Ann Chumpitaz (Peru) in the last round and breaking the deadlock against Carolina Lujan (Argentina), adding 24.6 points to her ELO score.

Cuban player Yaniet Marrero finished seventh with a score of 5.5 points after losing the final game to Lujan, while another Cuban player, Flavia Cancio-Bello, finished 17th.

This month, the International Chess Federation made Cuban player Osleyni Linares's Grand Master title official, which is proof of the great development of chess in the Caribbean island.
