Cuban Judokas May Qualify for Olympics
Monday, October 4, 2010

Havana.- The latest ranking of the International Judo Federation includes six Cuban judokas who may qualify for the Olympic Games in London.

Idalis Ortiz (+78 kg) is the best-placed Cuban judoka, ranking fourth in her division with a score of 940 points.

Other female judokas in the world ranking are Yaritza Abel (seventh in the 63-kg division), Yurisleidis Lupetey (ninth in 57 kg) and Yanet Bermoy (12th in 52 kg).

The men's ranking only includes Oscar Braison, who ranks tenth in the +100-kg division, and Oreidis Despaigne (14th in 100 kg). Both are among the top 22 judokas with chances to qualify directly for the Olympics.

However, next year will be decisive to qualify for the London games, as many competitions will be held, including four tournaments with a World Cup category.

The events include tournaments in Miami (United States), Isla Margarita (Venezuela) and San Salvador (El Salvador), in addition to Sao Paulo (Brazil), and the Pan-American Games in Guadalajara (Mexico).
