Cuba's Health System Spreads Use of New Medication
Monday, March 30, 2009

Havana.- Cuban health authorities are spreading the use of a medication known as Heberprot-P, which is administered to diabetic patients suffering from ulcers in their limbs to prevent amputations.

Heberprot-P is available in all hospitals throughout the country.

Experts from the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center (CIGB) pointed out that the medication will also be available in all Cuban polyclinics, in coordination with the Centers for Diabetic Patients.

The biotechnological product has successfully been administered to more than 2,000 Cuban patients suffering from complex ulcers resistant to conventional treatments.

So far, three clinical trials have shown that Heberprot-P is safe and effective to speed up the cicatrization in more than 80 percent of cases.
