Cuba Increases Coffee Production
Monday, January 12, 2009

Havana.- Cuba's coffee production grew to 8,000 tons last year, accounting for an increase of 27 percent compared to 2007.

Local agricultural authorities pointed out that coffee production rose despite the heavy rains that affected crops when the island nation was hit by several hurricanes.

They added that coffee production, which is expected to total 32,000 tons in about eight years, would stabilize in 2009.

That gradual increase in production would be possible thanks to the renovation of crops and the enlargement of cultivated areas, as well as efficient financial mechanisms to stimulate producers.

This year's goals include increasing production to meet the growing demand from the domestic market.
