Heritage in Central Cuba Preserved
Monday, April 7, 2008

Havana.- Authorities in central Cuba are carrying out a restoration project in the Village of Remedios, as part of efforts to preserve the local heritage.

The town, the eighth village founded by the Spanish conquistadors in Cuba, will benefit from the restoration of the Villena Theater, the maternal hospital, the house of culture and the municipal library.

Among the major actions taken in the town are the reactivation of the pluvial drainage, and the remodeling of the historic heart of the city, which was declared a national monument in 1980.

In addition, the Museum of Parrandas, local popular festivities first held in 1820 and one of the most important cultural expressions in central Cuba, will be moved into another building.

Remedios, which boasts great architectural wealth, was founded in 1515, after a group of Spaniards settled in a zone known as Santa Cruz de la Sabana de Vasco Porcallo.
