Cuba Increases Coconut Production
Monday, September 3, 2007

Havana.- The municipality of Baracoa, in Cuba's easternmost province, Guantánamo, reported a steady increase in coconut production during the first seven months of 2007.

According to statistics from the agricultural sector, coconut production had increased 20 percent, to 102,300 quintals, by the end of July, compared to the same period in 2006

According to this year's plan, the province will produce 276,000 quintals of coconut, especially during the September-December period, when the fruit matures.

Experts noted that production is still far below the record set in 1989, when the province produced 460,000 quintals of coconut.

As part of efforts to increase production, new varieties of coconut that are more resistant to plagues and diseases have been planted on Baracoa's coast.

As a complement, new agricultural techniques have been introduced to increase coconut production.
