Flamenco Dance in Eastern Cuba
Monday, October 31, 2005

Havana.- Sangre Gitana, a company that cultivates flamenco dance and music combined with Cuban musical rhythms, was founded in eastern Camagüey province in 2001.

The group is made up of 157 female dancers and a musical group, which complements the company's choreographic work.

According to experts, only female dancers are admitted in the group, independent of their age.

The company has performed in the provinces of Cienfuegos and Ciego de Avila, and won the second place at the 11th Choreographic Festival of Spanish Dances, sponsored by the Lizt Alfonso Ballet Company.

The experts said that Sangre Gitana also trains amateur artists and has made great contributions to Camagüey's cultural programs.

Although the group only admits female dancers, it may incorporate male dancers in the future.
