Cuba: A Leader in Tourism

Cuba, a stronghold for tourism in the Caribbean and Latin America, sustains its business in the diversity of natural, historic and cultural attractions that are present everywhere in the country.

Likewise, emblematic establishments, including the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, provide a touch of distinction with their unique elements.

With a history of nine decades, the hotel stands as a key part of the tourism sector in Cuba, with a location that strongly marks its presence on Havana's Malecón (Seaside Drive).

It is worth mentioning that the hotel is among the top ten Palace hotels in the world, in addition to having the category of Cuban National Monument and World Heritage Site, while the documents that record its history are part of the Memory of the World collection, sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Of eclectic architecture, with elements from art deco and Moorish architecture, the hotel has been visited by world-renowned personalities from national and international politics, culture and science.

Located in the coastal salient of Punta Brava, on the hill of Taganana -almost at the end of the cove of San Lázaro- the hotel occupies the site where the Battery of Santa Clara, a part of the defensive system of the Cuban capital and which still remain vestiges, was in the 18th century.

Holidaymakers are attracted by the galleries of the gardens, which are reminiscent of the monastic cloisters of Spanish-Moorish arcades, while the main floor resembles three parallel naves of a medieval church.

As an element to highlight, the hotel has won ten World Travel Awards, which are conferred from a rigorous selection process, in which more than half a million professionals from the travel and tourism sector from some 170 countries participate.

The magnificence of the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, over these years, has attracted hundreds of celebrities from the arts, sciences and politics.

The presidential suite welcomed leaders such as Sir Winston Churchill, who was Prime Minister of England; the king and queen of Belgium, and several heads of State who have visited Cuba.

Likewise, artists Frank Sinatra, Johnny Weissmuller, Marlon Brandon, Robert Redford, Buster Keaton, Danny Glover, Robert de Niro, as well as renowned filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, Oliver Stone and Francis Ford Coppola, have stayed in the hotel.

Among the divas who have stayed at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba are Rita Hayworth, Ava Gardner and Libertad Lamarque, as well as stars such as famous top models Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell.
