Cuba: Tourist Options in Havana

The Cuban capital, the main destination of the Caribbean island, sustains its tourist potential on new capacities and the recovery of the existing ones.

In this direction, the reopening of Hotel Capri in El Vedado neighborhood stands out, after an extensive modernization program to improve its facilities.

The 19-story, 250-room hotel and casino (now the Salon Rojo) was designed by the Cuban architect José Cánaves in 1956.

As part of the most recent renovation actions, the four star category was granted by the Ministry of Tourism of Cuba, after a rigorous process of verification of quality established by internationally validated standards.

The establishment, which combines its style from the 1950s with the comfort and modernity of the 21st century, is located in the most central area of El Vedado, a famous district in the Cuban capital.

Inaugurated in 1957, the Hotel Capri was integrated into the most modern constructions of its time in Cuba, next to the hotels Havana Riviera and Habana Hilton, which was renamed Habana Libre in June 1960.

Among its clientele, three market segments predominate, including groups and individual tourists. The latter is the one that brings the largest number of guests, including honeymooners, who love to stay at NH Capri.

In fact, given its multiple facilities, as well as the value of its executive services, the hotel has increasingly focused on the segment of business people.

Therefore, it offers two multipurpose rooms for meetings and events, Wi-Fi connection and a restaurant that offers innovative menus, according to the new trends that prevail for dinners and business meetings.

As a complement, the capital provides its historic center with numerous museums, churches, cultural centers and buildings closely linked to the colonial era, with some 33,000 buildings built mostly in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Once known as the village of San Cristóbal de La Habana, it is currently a unique example of the most diverse construction styles, reflecting the stages of development through which the historic city has gone through.

Its system of fortresses, with the emblematic Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro (Morro Castle), consists of nine large constructions that constitute, according to the experts, the most remarkable group of its kind in the Hispanic Americas.

Among Havana's major hotels is National de Cuba, which also ranks among the top 10 Palace Hotels in the world and was the only five-star establishment in the Caribbean region from the 1930s to the 1950s.

It should be noted that Cuba promotes urban tourism programs, for which it relies on the colonial heritage found everywhere in its cities.

Havana is also the ideal setting for a wide range of cultural events, including the New Latin American Film Festival and the International Ballet Festival, as well as the annual book fair.
