Cuba: Art, Recreation and Tourism

Cuba, full of attractions to develop the leisure industry, complements its tourist options with its centuries-old cultural legacy.

Unique culture and traditions inherited from the Spanish-colonial period are available for national and foreign tourists.

Old Havana, which was declared Humankind's Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), holds more than 100 buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries, and about 200 houses from the 18th century.

Another important city is Camagüey, the capital of the eastern Cuban province of the same name, which was founded as Villa de Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe.

Also known as "the city of tinajones", Camagüey is famous for those large earthenware jars, which were used centuries ago to collect rainwater for human consumption and currently decorate gardens and parks

In central Cuba, the major historic attractions are in Sancti Spiritus, the only Cuban province that holds two of the first villages founded by Spanish Governor Diego Velázquez in the 16th century: Villa del Espíritu Santo (Holy Spirit) and Villa de la Santísima Trinidad (Holy Trinity), founded in 1514.

Also called Cuba's City Museum, Trinidad has the privilege of being one of the colonial towns in the country and is among the most complete and best-preserved architectural complexes in the American continent.

Large colonial mansions, luxury palaces and Cuban colonial art turned Trinidad into an undisputable urban and architectural jewel.

According to statistics, 48 percent of Cuba's historic sites are located in eastern Granma province, including the provincial capital, Bayamo, which was declared a National Monument and was capital of the Republic in Arms during the first war of independence in 1868.

Tourism also benefits from Cuba's culture and traditions, in which there is a mixture of African, aboriginal, Chinese, French and, of course, Spanish elements.

Cuba has about 120 art galleries, antique shops and art exhibition halls, in addition to nearly 260 museums and more than 80 theaters.

Cultural festivals and artistic fairs, including music, cinema and literature, are among the main offers for vacationers.

Movie theaters in both Havana and other provinces screen films from the Americas every year, during the Latin American New Film Festival, which has become one of the most attractive cinematographic events in the region.
