Cuban Musical Group Will Release Record on 50th Anniversary
Monday, September 30, 2002

Havana.- The Cuban folkloric group Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, considered one of the Island’s major promoters of rumba, will release a record to commemorate its 50th anniversary.

Experts said that the CD, entitled “Rumba de Corazón” (Rumba from the Heart), covers different varieties of that musical genre.

Leaders of the group, which won a Latin Grammy last year, pointed out that the way rumba is performed in the western province of Matanzas has peculiar characteristics.

In that regard, they recalled that songs are characterized by a complex vocal work and a different priority for percussion instruments, compared to what groups in Havana, the other region of the country where this artistic manifestation is cultivated, have done so far.

The rumba originated in the late 18th century in urban areas of Matanzas and Havana, in humble neighborhoods with large black populations.

In the beginning, the rumba was performed with any wooden object that could produce sound and, as it was developed, musicians incorporated the drums.
