Musical Values Highlighted in Havana's Historic Heart
Monday, October 4, 2004

Havana.- The concert hall at the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, in Havana's historic heart, plays an essential role in the promotion of culture in Cuba.

A decade ago, the basilica, one of the most valuable baroque buildings in Havana, was turned into a concert hall, where chamber, instrumental and choral music is played.

As part of the celebrations on the 10th anniversary of the institution, a program of concerts have been organized, including performances by pianist Frank Fernández and the Exaudi chorus, directed by María Felicia Pérez.

Other artists included in the program are pianist Andrés Alén and the Promúsica duet, Ensemble de Cámara de Solistas de La Habana, and the Música Eterna chamber orchestra, conducted by Guido López-Gavilán.

The former Church of Saint Francis of Assisi was founded on January 18, 1575, when Havana authorities authorized Fray Francisco Jiménez to apply for a license to found a monastery for the Franciscan order in the city.
