Arts and Crafts School Major General Antonio Maceo Grajales
Historic Sites
Address
. Santiago de Cuba
Description
The arts and crafts school of Oriente was opened in 1928, under the law enforced by the government indicating that each province of the country had to have one of these schools. A fire destroyed the original building in 1940, and from that moment on, the students and teachers started to struggle to build a new building. Finally, on January 17, 1948, the new facility was opened with the presence of the republic Ramon Grau San Martin. The current building meets the architectural requirements of the monumental modern style, which is characterized by the use of pure volumes, predominance of horizontal straight lines and lack of decorations. The students and teachers of this school have been the players of important revolutionary struggles throughout our history, and Felix Pena Diaz is a special example.
