Cuba Boost Production in Aquiculture Sector
Monday, September 16, 2019

Havana.- The Cuban aquaculture sector has taken actions to increase production, with a view to guaranteeing supplies for the domestic market.

The priorities focus on the recovery of the infrastructure, which has deteriorated by the financial difficulties of recent years.

In addition, there are plans to incorporate innovative systems of intensive cultivation technologies with water recirculation, which save between 80 and 90 percent of water.

Together with this, intensive raising and genetic improvement of the species will be prioritized, in order to increase fish production and to contribute to food security.

In recent year, the country has produced an average of 24,000 tons of fish, including silver carp (tench), claria and tilapia.

Development plans also include raising freshwater lobster and angula fishing, the latter is highly demanded in the international market.
