Employment Increases in Cuban Private Sector

Havana.- The private sector in the Cuban economy reported 605,908 employees in in late May, accounting for a moderate increase compared to April.

According to official sources, 65 percent of those employees work in the provinces of Havana, Matanzas, Villa Clara, Camagüey, Holguin and Santiago de Cuba.

During the period, there were 185,903 newly registered self-employed workers, about half of them in Havana, Villa Clara and Holguin, in such economic activities as food, transport, beauty services, producer or seller of varied articles and hired workers.

Among the most representative modalities, food production and sale, cargo and passenger transport, house, room and space rentals, telecommunications agents and hired workers stand out.

Self-employment in Cuba has maintained an upward trend and, of more than 157,000 people who were part of that sector in 2010, their number rose to 13 percent of those employed in the country in 2018.
