Measures against Cuba Affect Cruise Tourism
Monday, June 17, 2019

Havana.- The additional restrictive measures taken by the United States against Cuba affect cruise tourism, an important segment of the leisure industry.

Washington established a ban on Cuban ports for shipping companies that develop this tourist modality.

The main cruise lines immediately eliminated their stopovers in Cuba and began to reorient their ships quickly to other destinations, including Mexico.

US cruises to Cuba began operations in May 2016, when then President Barack Obama improved relations with Havana.

In the first four months of the year, nearly 143,000 people arrived in Cuba by boat, accounting for an increase of more than 300 percent over the same period in 2018.
