Genetic Studies for Prevention in Cuba
Monday, May 27, 2019

Havana.- Genetic studies gain prominence in the prevention of several diseases in Cuba, with a positive impact on the quality of life of people.

In the case of Ciego de Avila, the Provincial Genetics Center leads a project that seeks to characterize the human genome, taking into account the family's predisposition to suffer from long-term diseases.

The study, being carried out at the primary healthcare level, would show the identification of families and generations affected by malignant tumors, basically prostate, breast, lung and colon cancer.

The evaluation of genes would show the first leads on which people are the most prone to have these pathologies, which would be transmitted recessively from generation to generation.

According to the World Health Organization I(WHO), it is estimated that by 2020, cancer will be one of the leading causes of disability worldwide and one of the most costly health problems.
