Award Granted to Santa Ifigenia Cemetery in Cuba
Monday, April 22, 2019

Havana.- The Santa Ifigenia Cemetery, in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, was recognized with the National Monument Conservation and Restoration Award in the Conservation category.

The award is granted every year from a very select list made by the National Council of Cultural Heritage.

The cemetery has an extension of 133,000 square meters and holds about 8,000 tombs and funerary constructions of various types.

On April 22, 1868, the first two burials were made, thus accumulating an impressive history in 151 years of existence.

Santa Ifigenia protects Mariana Grajales Cuello, the Mother of the Nation; Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, the Father of the Nation; and Jose Marti, the National Hero of Cuba.
