Foreign Interest in Cuban Charcoal
Monday, March 18, 2019

Havana.- Cuban charcoal made from sickle bush is highly demanded in the international market, due to its high quality for gastronomy.

In the case of the eastern province of Ciego de Avila, some 300,000 tons of charcoal have been exported to Europe from 2005 to date.

Sales abroad are handled by the company Citricos Caribe S.A to nations like Italy, Greece, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Spain and the United Kingdom.

In that period, the company earned about 68 million dollars for the marketing of charcoal.

Charcoal is an energy source that does not affect the environment and the raw material abounds in Cuba as there are around one million hectares infested by aroma and sickle bush.

A machine was also designed to improve and classify the charcoal for its use in wood furnaces.
