Measures Taken to Protect City of Venice
Monday, January 7, 2019

Rome.- Authorities in Venice will apply a fee between 2.5 and 10 euros to tourists who visit the city for a day, without spending the night in it, with a view to protecting the urban environment.

In the case of visitors staying in hotels or other establishments, the contribution is included in the tourist tax itself.

The amount collected will finance the extra time that firefighters, police officers and cleaning services must work.

The Regulation of the Urban Police of the Municipality of Venice prohibits sitting in spaces established for that purpose in San Marco Square and on the pier, on a penalty of 200 euros.

In addition, it is forbidden to consume food or drinks outside certain areas, as well as to throw or leave papers, cans, bottles on the public floor, or impede circulation by staying on bridges and streets.

Cycling through the Historical Center of Venice is also sanctioned with 100 euros.
