Italian Cinema in Cuban Theaters
Monday, January 7, 2019

Havana.- A program to screen Italian neorealistic movies will take place at Cuban theaters.

This movement, which emerged after the World War II, had deep social roots and a naturalistic projection, notable in real settings and the use of non-professional actors.

According to experts, this alternative allowed filmmakers to comment on reality by distancing themselves so much from the style and concerns of Hollywood in the 1950s.

Its influence on Cuba is given by the fact that founders of the new Cuban cinema such as Julio Garcia Espinosa and Tomas Gutierrez Alea, aka Titon, studied in Rome.

The program includes works like Obsession (Luchino Visconti, 1942), Four Steps Through the Clouds (Alessandro Blasetti, 1942); Rome, Open City (Roberto Rossellini, 1945) and The Shoeshine Boy (Vittorio de Sica, 1946).
