Improved Health Care for the Elderly in Cuba
Monday, November 12, 2018

Havana.- The Cuban eastern province of Ciego de Avila promotes actions to reduce the mortality rates among the elderly, and reports a life expectancy of 78 years.

In that regard, periodic health exams and systematic work among sports, cultural and medical institutions in the territory are promoted.

With these measures, there is better control and monitoring of diseases that threaten the lives of the elderly, including cerebrovascular diseases, acute respiratory infections and heart ailments.

Compared to the same period in 2017, this year's death rate among people aged 60 to 74 has decreased from 22.79 to 22.

In addition, deaths decreased in the age group of 75 years and older, with respect to the first ten months of 2017, while in group of 60 years and more that indicator dropped to 43.56.

Some 83,473 people of Ciego de Avila are over60 years of age, accounting for 19.1 percent of the total population of the territory, hence the priority to target that population segment.
