Cuba Marks World Alzheimer's Day
Monday, September 24, 2018

Havana.- Cuba, whose population shows a tendency to aging, is part of the international campaign on the World Alzheimer's Day.

The objective of the conference, which takes place every year on September 21, is to raise awareness about this type of dementia and to challenge the stigma.

The importance of the issue in Cuba is highlighted by the fact that 20 percent of the population is 60 years of age or older and the incidence of the disease increases proportionally with aging.

Therefore, it is estimated that approximately 160,000 Cubans are suffering from Alzheimer's or related dementias, and this number will increase to 273,000 by 2030.

Hence, in the next 30 years, the demand for long-term care for people with dementia will increase by 10 times compared to today's needs.
