Cuban Agriculture Fosters Rice Production
Monday, August 20, 2018

Havana.- The strategy to increase rice production stands out among the priorities of Cuban agriculture, with a view to meeting annual demand of 700,000 tons.

In that regard, work is being done to apply new techniques in soil preparation and to develop seed varieties, among other actions.

Actions include the cleaning of irrigation and drainage systems, the improvement of fields and the introduction of drying and milling technologies in order to improve efficiency and optimize the quality of grains.

Cuba currently produces approximately 300,000 tons of rice, and the Development Program aims to achieve 400,000 tons of food by 2020.

Although the crop is present throughout the country, the highest productive capacities are reported in the provinces of Granma, Camagüey, Sancti Spíritus and Pinar del Río.
