Archaeological Discovery on Display in Central Cuba
Monday, August 20, 2018

Havana.- Cuban experts exhibited elements of an archaeological discovery on the south coast of the central province of Sancti Spiritus.

The find correspond to a colonial-era ship sunk near Cayo Zaza, whose name could be Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria or San Carlos.

According to experts, a bronze cannon, discovered and extracted by fishermen in 2009, is the only piece with an external date (1777) to be considered.

The piece has the seal of King Carlos III and the place of manufacture in Seville, Spain, and was transferred at the time to Trinidad, which was designated Humankind's Cultural Heritage City in 1988.

In addition, an expedition last May found an anchor with an iron trap that dates after 1780, along with eight pieces of artillery and four others that were under the sand blanket.
