Citrus Crops Grow in Cuba |
|
|
Monday, August 6, 2018
Havana.- The agricultural sector in the Cuban eastern province of Ciego de Avila has extended citrus crops with a view to meeting the growing demand from the market.
The territory already has 1,000 hectares of that crop, which will also allow meeting the demands from the processing industry.
Simultaneously with the harvest of lemon, orange and grapefruit, the collection of pineapple, guava and mango has also increased, the latter to make canned preserves.
Although Hurricane Irma knocked down more than 1,500 tons of fruit, its use was made possible thanks to the operations of 14 small factories and the Ceballos industrial complex.
In 2006, Ciego de Avila lost 4,000 hectares of orange, lemon, grapefruit and tangerine to a plague of Huanglonbing (HLB), also known as the Yellow Dragon.
