Prominent Cuban Athlete Dies |

Havana.- Pedro Pérez Dueñas, a leading figure in Cuban athletics and triple jump world record holder, died in this capital at the age of 66.
Pérez Dueñas set a world record in the 1971 Pan-American Games in Cali, Colombia, where he jumped 17.40 meters, in addition to four world records in the junior category.
Before the Cali Games, he had been the Most Outstanding Rookie in Cuba in 1970, a year when he won the Youth World Championship (16.20 meters), the Central American Games in Panama (16.33) and in the National Championship (16.38).
He was also the champion in the Central American Games in Santo Domingo in1974. During his sports career, he set four absolute national triple jump records (16.38, 16.86, 16.92 and 17.40 meters).
After his retirement, he worked as a specialist in sports medicine within the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER) of Cuba, and had responsibilities in the Cuban Athletics Federation.
