Volcan de Fuego Affects Tourism in Guatemala
Monday, July 16, 2018

Guatemala.- The tourism sector in Guatemala reported losses of around three million dollars as a result of the impact generated by the eruption of the Volcan de Fuego (Volcano of Fire).

The initial predictions showed an expansion of the leisure industry of around 10 percent, but after that phenomenon, it was adjusted to 7 percent.

It is worth mentioning that after the eruption, access to the Acatenango volcano was temporarily suspended, together with the cancellation of reservations to visit the area.

The eruption of the Volcano of Fuego, which is 3,763 meters high, was followed by an avalanche of pyroclastic flows (a mixture of rocks, gases and ash) that buried the San Miguel Los Lotes community.

Faced with this, authorities are working to increase the flow of visitors, which implies the promotion of destinations such as Tikal National Park, Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala City, the Chichicastenango Lake and the Semuc Champey Natural Monument.
