Cuban Population Continues to Age
Monday, May 21, 2018

Havana.- The phenomenon known as population aging is gaining ground in Cuban society, since late 2017, when 20.1 percent of Cubans were 60 years of age or older.

That portion is equivalent to 2.246 million people, which confirms that demographic trend in Cuba.

According to experts, by 2030, the aging rate of the Cuban population is expected to be 30.3 percent, accounting for 3,304,685 people aged 60 and over.

Under this trend, health and social assistance systems face new challenges, as senior citizens require permanent support in their daily basic activities.

Together with this, there is the presence of dementias, considered the first cause of disability in the elderly and the largest number of dependent people.
