Cuban Health Authorities Promote Prevention of Hypertension
Monday, March 5, 2018

Havana.- The health system of the central province of Sancti Spiritus is promoting actions to prevent high blood pressure.

According to official statistics, about 26 percent of the population suffers from that disease, with more than 120,500 with hypertension in the province in 2017.

The experts noted that among the risk factors that cause blood pressure to rise are smoking, diabetes mellitus, age over 55 for men and 65 for women, and a sedentary lifestyle, in addition to parasitic or viral infections, menopause and C-reactive protein.

In that regard, preventive actions include doing physical exercises for 30 minutes a day, avoiding obesity and quitting smoking.

In addition, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is recommended, and as well as low-fat and low-salt food, while alcohol consumption should be less than 30 milliliters a day (in the case of men) and 15 for women.
