Cuba Activates Tests to Detect Cystic Fibrosis
Monday, January 22, 2018

Havana.- Cuba's healthcare system has kicked off a program in five provinces to detect cystic fibrosis during the first week after birth.

According to experts, the program currently involves the provinces of Havana, Mayabeque, Artemisa, Matanzas and Sancti Spíritus, and will contribute to making an early diagnosis of the disease.

In that regard, the trial will last three months to evaluate the accuracy of the diagnostic kit, which was created at the Immuno-Essay Center in Havana.

According to statistics from the public health sector, Cuba has reported 290 cases of cystic fibrosis, 60 percent of which are children and 40 percent are patients over 19 years of age.

Cystic fibrosis is a hereditary disease that can be transmitted by either the father or the mother, although they may not be sick.
