Cuba Implements Strategy to Control AIDS

Havana.- Cuba's healthcare system has taken actions to keep AIDS under control by reducing infections and the late diagnosis of the disease.

According to experts, Cuban healthcare authorities have increase preventive action, so 81 percent of HIV patients are under treatment at present.

Nearly 28,000 people have been diagnosed with HIV in Cuba since the beginning of the epidemic in 1986, and 23,000 are living with the disease today.

Moreover, Cuba was the first country in the world in validating the elimination of mother-child transmission of HIV and congenital syphilis in 2015.

In 2018, the strategy will be aimed at prevention, intersectorial work and the work with target groups, as well as the training of health promoters.
