Cuba to Increase Pineapple Exports
Monday, November 6, 2017

Havana.- The agricultural sector in the eastern Cuban province of Ciego de Avila is working hard to increase pineapple exports to raise revenues in foreign currencies.

Local farmers have planted 1,459 hectares of pineapple of the MD-2 and Spanish Red varieties, and the plan is to reach 2,000 hectares by late 2018.

They also plan to export more than 1,000 tons of MD-2 pineapple to Europe, considering that the fruit is highly demanded in markets like Spain, Italy and France.

The MD-2 pineapple was introduced in Cuba in 2012 with hybrids imported from Costa Rica and more than 100 hectares of that variety have been planted, and there are prospects to expand crops.

The MD-2 pineapple is bigger, while the Spanish Red variety is more resistant to climate change and demands fewer inputs.
